We released a book yesterday! |
I’m a little adventurous, but I wasn’t always that way. My husband is the one who encouraged me to get my nose out of books, to touch the grass, and see that sky over my head. During the early days of our engagement, we went kayaking in Alki Beach, a little pocket in West Seattle. I remember asking, “What if we flip over?” Do you know what the tour guide said to me? “I’ve never seen anyone flip over before.” Can you guess what happened next? A big barge, one with hundreds of shipping containers, came through the Puget Sound and made some pretty impressive wake that headed right towards our little group. The shore looked so far away. The panic was building in my chest. The wave hit, and instantly, my kayak was upside down with me in it. Oh god. Oh god. Oh god. I’m going to die kayaking in front of my fiance, who I’m still trying to impress by the way. He can’t think he made a mistake. I manage to wiggle myself out, and I am thrashing in the water, just one of those moments where I suddenly forgot how to swim despite actually being a pretty strong swimmer. I was new to adventures, you guys, I wasn’t using critical thinking. My now husband (yeah, he got past this somehow) came over to me and said, “Stand up.” So I did. And despite being SO far out from the shore, we were barely waist deep. I swear this is a real story. Do you know what happened next? My engagement ring was gone. Slipped right off of my finger. Our tour guy said, “Hey, it’s high tide. Mark the spot and come back in the morning with a metal detector.” So we left, went to Sports Authority, bought a 200-dollar metal detector, and came back and “metal detected.” Official verb. We ran into someone else who was also metal detecting, and his setup was SERIOUS. We told him our story, and he looked at our equipment and said, you’ll never find it with this. It’s cheap. I’m in a treasure hunter club. Let me look for it. Do you know how long it took him to find my diamond engagement ring? 3 minutes. He asked if he could take a picture and put our story in the club newsletter. We thanked him, bought him a beer later on, and here we are today. That ring is still on my finger 13 years later. I’m a lot more adventurous today, including putting two books out in a year that I poured my heart and soul into writing.
